The following web sites are ones that I have come across in my web wanderings during my Teacher Fellowship in 2004.

The web sites that are listed, in many cases offer ready to use GIS functions. There is no complex GIS involved but they introduce people to some of the basic GIS icons. I have listed them by current syllabus/Achievement standard topics. Population/ Inequalities and Development sites

GEO Data Portal
UN web site with a GIS that allows you to produce a map, graph or table
of global statistics that you want, eg % population urban, life expectancy etc.
Wide range of statistics available and you choose the years. Has basic query
and pan facilities. You can change classification and colour ramp. Maps
come up on the screen fast. Many can be down loaded. GIS made simple....and free. No need for ArcView etc. For teachers and students. (Accessed 23/06/2004)

UNESCO Institute for Statistics
UNESCO web site with excellent tables for down loading and some ready drawn maps of socio-economic data. No need for ArcView etc. For students and teachers. (Accessed 23/06/2004)..

Auckland Regional Council Geographic Information and Mapping
The ARC’s web site about Auckland, its growth, patterns, congestion, commuting etc. This site covers a significant part of the Yr12 Geography topic; urban settlements – a New Zealand settlement of regional or national importance. No need for ArcView etc. For students and teachers. (Accessed June 2004).

Urbanicity
A site about urban settlements with an emphasis on sustainability and good practise. It has a useful section called cities on line. Under the other headings you choose what you are interested in. There are GIS links in several sections. Cities on line is a huge list of cities that have web sites many with a web GIS. No need for ArcView etc. For teachers . (Accessed July 2004)

Antarctica

On-line Ross Sea Region GIS
On line Ross Sea region GIS. Maps of soils, aerial mosaics. Zoom in to glaciers, penguin nesting sites etc. No need for ArcView although if you have it you will be able to make use of other areas of this site. For students and teachers. (Accessed July 2004)

GIS Definitions, Dictionaries, Map Resources

University of Auckland Library - web references sites: Geography & Environmental Science
A large number of links for different areas of Geography eg weather, mapping, population, legislation etc. An entré to a wide range of web sites.

Land Information New Zealand
Free maps and aerial photographs to download. Links to other sites. For teachers.

The Great Britain Ordnance Survey
A separate section for Education with some fun activities to do for younger students under mapzone. Free downloads of British maps.

Old Maps
If you are from Britain, this is a useful site. Look up the town you are from and view maps and photographs from earlier times. No need for other software. Students could use it but probably of more interest to teachers. (Accessed June 2004).

Even if time is short, a quick flick through some of these may well provide a useful site or two.

A very useful site with links to free data and interesting other sites. Have a go at geo caching. You need a GPS. For teachers. (Accessed July 2004).
