About GISMAPED

Our Philosophy

GISMAPED is a vehicle for providing professional development in the use of GIS as a teaching tool.

We see GIS as being able to enhance the delivery of the curriculum by:

  • Encouraging an inquiry approach
  • Students can manipulate data using the power of computer software allowing a focus on geographic questions and concepts
  • Using real world data
  • Hands-on discovery rather than teacher telling the facts
  • Visual – encourages a focus on spatial patterns
  • Allows for multiple intelligences and different learning styles
  • Cooperative and collaborative learning is encouraged.

We provide resources including books, software and prepared lessons, as well as professional development workshops.

Workshops
Through investigations requires no previous experience with GIS.
Special projects requires some basic GIS skills and preferably some classroom experience using GIS.

Our courses are targeted for teachers and designed for the NZ curriculum. We can focus on any curriculum area. The emphasis of the workshops is on classroom resources, rather than technical GIS skills or GIScience.

Software
Attendance at a Though Investigations workshop of a staff member from a school qualifies the school for Arc View software and NZ topo and census data at a discounted price

Resources
GISMAPED has available a range of books and other resources.
